FAQ

How long have you been in existence?
The STAR Technology Enterprise Center began operations as Tampa Bay’s first manufacturing/ technology accelerator in June 2003. Who funds STAR TEC?
The organization is funded through client fees; grants from the Community Reuse Organization (CRO), Florida High Tech Corridor (FHTC) and Pinellas County Economic Development; and private contributions.

Who benefits from STAR TEC?
Ultimately, the entire community will, through the development of new jobs, new products/services, new sources of manufacturing and technology capabilities and new opportunities for specialized employment for students.  A successful innovation center also lends powerful credibility to the Tampa Bay region’s stature as a technology-friendly community.

What type of clients do you work with?

How do you assist companies?
STAR TEC clients receive a wide array of services such as shared equipment and meeting space, access to financial markets, affordable lease terms, administrative services and access to business professionals within the Tampa Bay region.

STAR TEC clients also work with staff, and in some cases, are assigned a mentor and/or team of advisors to assist with strategic issues. This team of serial entrepreneurs and business professionals help clients with market research, strategy formation and sales execution.

How long do companies usually stay in the STAR TEC program?
STAR TEC has several programs, each designed for technology entrepreneurs at various stages of business development. Typically, clients stay within the TEC Launch Program for 6 months, TEC Venture Program for one year, and TEC Accelerator Program for two to three years. We encourage you to contact us to determine which program is best for you.

What is the goal of these programs? What can I expect to gain from joining STAR TEC?
A start-up company can easily get bogged down in tactical matters.  Failure to plan, lack of market research, lack of financial planning and budgeting, and failure to seek advice from a professional can destroy a business.  STAR TEC and its network of professional service providers work with the entrepreneur to help abate risk, solve problems faster, shorten the learning curve and increase their likelihood of success.

How involved with academic institutions and research labs are you?
Since STAR TEC is not housed at a University, it has the distinct advantage to work with many academic institutions.   Members from St. Petersburg College, the University of Tampa, the University of South Florida and the University of Central Florida currently serve on the STAR TEC Board.  Additionally, STAR TEC has worked with several defense labs, research institutions, and technology transfer organizations all over the country.
